She had burns on 96% of her body, and doctors gave her just a 1% chance of survival—a miracle she almost didn’t receive.

A Tragic Turning Point.
Catrin, who was born and reared in North Wales, UK, was an outgoing youngster who enjoyed traveling. In April 2013, when the ski season came to a close, she boarded a bus in the French Alps to return to Britain. The path, known for its steep descent and 21 abrupt hairpin turns, became the site of a tragedy. As Catrin approached the 20th corner, she heard the driver mumble, “I’ve got no brakes!” Moments thereafter, terror broke out as the bus sped out of control.

“You could feel the bus soaring,” Catrin explains. “People were screaming, breaking windows, and jumping out.” She apologized in her head to her parents: “I’m so sorry, Mum and Dad.” In a last act of courage, the driver steered the bus onto a rock wall, save hundreds of people. Tragically, he was the only victim among the 52 passengers and received the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery posthumously.

A Long Road to Recovery.
Catrin was trapped in the blazing wreckage and received serious burns to her face, arms, legs, and chest, leaving only the soles of her feet and a few spots of scalp unaffected. She was airlifted to a hospital in Grenoble, where she faced almost unfathomable odds. With no skin to shield her from infection, she endured nearly 200 procedures, including skin grafts utilizing tissue from her scalp that was extracted many times. Her mother and brother even gave their skin, suffering their own hospitalizations to save her life.

Despite the agonizing discomfort, Catrin stayed resolute. After years of therapy, she recovered her life, accepting her identity as a burn survivor and dedicated herself to assisting others.
