Providing for her daughter Kayla, who married young and had a boy, and her husband Austin, who found solace on the living room couch and spent his days in front of the TV with his beer in one hand and the remote in the other, was Debra’s sole goal in life for a long time.
He lost his job about twenty years ago, but he never looked for another one because his wife was employed. For whatever reason, he believed that Debra should continue to be the primary provider.
However, neither Austin nor Kayla ever saw Debra become a self-negligent, abandoned lady. She never spent her money on anything other than her husband’s necessities and Kayla’s stipend. Kayla never bothered to look for work because she had become accustomed to her mother’s wealth.
For so long, Debra was taken for granted without understanding it. She had to change her life, though, after something occurred to her one day.
A gang of youngsters pushed her and cut in front of her as she was at Starbucks waiting for her coffee and thinking about the work that was making her sad. The cashier took the children’s orders without protest. They began making fun of Debra when she protested, referring to her as a “pensioner that had nowhere to be” and a “old nag.”
In a panic, she grabbed her coffee and got into her car. She realized she had been ignoring herself for too long after looking in the mirror inside. She hardly recognized herself. She appeared worn out, with creases on her face that she couldn’t recall creating and gray beginning to seep into her hair. She realized abruptly that decades of taking care of others had come at the expense of her own health.
Debra’s life changed as a result of that encounter. She went to the closest salon to get her hair trimmed and dyed instead of going to work. She then bought herself some new outfits, including several elegant gowns.
She informed Kayla over the phone on the way home that she should no longer rely on her financial aid. She had to get a job on her own because she was an adult with a child to raise. Startled, Kayla questioned what she had done wrong. Debra simply stated that it was her decision and that it was final because she lacked the strength to debate.
After arriving home, Austin gave her a perplexed expression. He was upset because she had left work early and gone home. Debra, however, didn’t give a damn about his opinion. She informed him that she wanted a divorce since she had had enough.
It was time for Austin and Kayla to take charge of their own lives.
Austin was compelled to vacate the house the next day.
Debra eventually discovered a fulfilling career. She began to travel and went to areas she never would have thought to see. It felt lovely to live. She felt happy with herself for the first time in years.
She eventually became friendly with her daughter, who came to see that her mother had been correct all along. After finding employment, Austin pleaded with Debra to take him back. Since she was still working on getting back in touch with herself, she indicated she would think about that later.
