One evening, Jim informed his book-reading wife, “Sandy, the little girl is waving at me again from the window.” Jim’s curiosity in their tiny neighbor made Sandy smile. Jim says he didn’t wave back when asked. He was uneasy about her. She peered earnestly, as if to ask for help.
Sandy chuckled at Jim’s fears, saying the girl was probably bored and frequented the window.
Jim’s dreams included the young girl.
He told Sandy he was visiting the neighbors the next day, feeling stupid. She offered it to soothe him and ease his concerns about the girl’s safety.

Before Jim could recover, the toddler raced to the door, shouting, “Daddy!”
Juliette welcomed him inside and said she was pregnant after their breakup years before. Jim moved before she gave birth, and she couldn’t find him.
Heidi, his daughter, waved continuously.
Jim broke down in front of Sandy at home and disclosed the startling truth.
Sandy contemplated the news, astonished and overwhelmed. After years of trying, Sarah and Jim faced the idea of no children.
Sandy suggested Jim to test the child’s DNA for paternity. Juliette agreed, and after a painful wait, Jim’s heart verified Heidi was his daughter.
Juliette apologized for the challenges, but she wanted Heidi to meet her father.
Jim and Sandy said no apologies were required. Heidi was gladly accepted.
Heidi marked a new chapter in her window that night. Jim waved back joyfully as she waved again. He trusted that fatherhood was his calling, even if it was unexpected.
