When you’ve been passed over for a career opportunity, you may have wondered what it was about you that made the cut. Were your abilities lacking, or was it more about how you came across?
Ash Putnam, 23, posted a video on TikTok expressing her anger after being rejected from a job at TJ Maxx. The video quickly went viral.
Thousands upon thousands of people have commented on the video, and it has over seven million views. Everyone in the comments appeared to agree on one point as the tattooed 20-something pondered how young people might secure entry-level jobs.
Putnam went on her popular TikTok channel to describe the process of applying for a job at TJ Maxx and receiving an automated email “a few weeks” later that rejected her.
“They simply sent me an automated email; they were unable to even contact me by phone.”
Putnam went to the business where she had applied and got into an argument with the staff because she was unhappy with the answer.
I was wondering, “So, what was the reason why I wasn’t hired?” when I walked in today. There were applicants with more experience than you, she said, “Oh, you simply don’t have enough experience.”
I know a lot of establishments don’t like tattoos, so I naturally asked her if that was the reason. it wasn’t the reason, she claimed; I don’t believe it to be true, but whatever.
There is no indication that I will not be a hard worker just because I have tattoos. It is very bewildering to me. People who have visible body modifications, such as tattoos and piercings, are among the most bright and articulate individuals she has ever seen.
@ashxobrien I want to know who is also having a hard time finding a job right now! #jobs #jobmarket
People on TikTok seemed to agree on the reason the Californian, who works for Uber Eats, was rejected the job, even though TJ Maxx never gave her a clear response.
“tattoo artist located here, it’s likely the tattoos”
An HR manager is present. Nobody would ever think to introduce you to clients like TJ Maxx.
“The ones with the most visible body modification, like tattoos and piercings, are the ones that TJ Maxx hires off the street.”
“I don’t believe it’s related to your body art…”It seems like it’s the location of your tattoos???”
It seems that Putnam is also of the opinion that it’s her tattoos.
A lot of people find my tattoos terrifying and demonic, therefore I definitely believe it’s related to them,” she told the Daily Star.
anything’s simply a bunch of comments people have left on my video; TJ Maxx never told me anything. No one is kind to me on TikTok; some even think I’d be better off working for a Halloween shop or a circus.
Companies should reconsider their employment practices, she says, regardless of whether her body art was the reason she was rejected from the store.
They should really reconsider their beliefs if they believe tattoos are a measure of a person’s ability to do a job well. People with coloured hair, tattoos, or piercings may nevertheless have professional jobs. Originality and imagination are on display. It’s the year 2024; people must get past their aversion to tattoos.
